Spider / Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are those large, raised swollen and twisted blood vessels. Spider veins are smaller and redder/purpler/bluer versions of the varicose veins. Both are very visible through the skin. Varicose veins are more common on the legs; spider veins are more common on the legs and face. There are many causes to varicose and spider veins: heredity, pressure from standing too long, obesity, hormonal influences, the use of birth control pills, postmenopausal hormonal replacements, blood clot history, conditions when increased pressure is applied to the abdomen (tumors, constipation, or garments like corsets), trauma or injury to the skin, previous vein surgery, or exposure to UV rays.
Symptoms of both veins include tiredness, pain, restlessness, throbbing, burning, tingling or heaviness in the legs. As for spider veins on the face, a common symptom is itchiness. They develop more often in women than in men, and also increase in frequency with age.
