What are stretch marks ?
Caused by broken down dermis, stretch marks are notorious for troubling both men and women. Factors include: skin tone, age, sun damage, diet, weight gain/loss, and pregnancy.
These marks are linear narrow streaks on the skin, typically found around the thighs, buttocks, breast and upper arms. These marks actually represent a form of scarring in the dermis of the skin. Early stretch marks are pink and slight raised, whereas late ones often are white and slightly depressed.
What causes stretch marks?
The most common cause of stretch mark is due to the mechanical stretching of skin, which leads to rupture of connective tissue of the dermis, creating a scar like process. Mechanical stretching happens during pregnancy, weight changes, and even excessive weight lifting. Other causes include adolescent growth, genetics, and steroid use.
