Covid-19 Antibody Test
Do You Have Antibody Protection Against the Coronavirus?
COVID-19 ANTIBODY TEST
This serology test is a screening test to detect the presence of igG and/or IgM antibodies to the Covid-19 virus in an individual blood. Antibodies are proteins produced by one’s body to fight off infection.
A positive antibody test indicates past resolved viral infection, the presence of protective antibodies, and possible immunity.
A negative antibody test indicates no past viral exposure but does not diagnose acute infection. An acute infection swab test is needed to diagnose recent or acute infection.
In past experiences, presence of antibodies from antibody testing suggests protection against future infection. For example, presence of antibodies against respiratory illnesses such as flu and SARS has demonstrated protective immunity.
However, for Covid-19, the presence of antibodies cannot yet for certainty forecast the degree, strength or duration of protection and immunity. As such, protective measures such as use of face masks and physical distancing are still important in the time being.
These tests are provided by FDA sanctioned laboratories, allowed for use or for distribution under FDA emergency use authorization but have not been reviewed by the FDA.
Two types of tests are available:
- Lab or office based blood draw test: results available within one week
- Home rapid finger prick blood test: results available within half hour
Does not test for acute or recent infection
- Patients with realistic expectation
- Healthcare or first-responder personnel
- Preparation for surgery
- Suspect for past infection in the absence of initial testing for acute infection
- Patients with unrealistic expectation
- Suspect for acute or recent infection
Results for the rapid home finger stick test are available in half hour.
Your physician will review test results at time of consultation and provide you copies of the testing.
Healthy eating and exercise are helpful to enhance results.
Further treatment may be recommended to further results.
