Stem cells are specialized cells with two specialized functions: self renewal by creating cells of same type, and differentiation by creating different cell types.
Stem cells are unspecialized cells which give rise to specialized cells. In other words, all other cells in a developing body stem from these cells. In the early stage of an embryo, stem cells are pluripotent, meaning that they can develop into any cells.
